Too many cannabis strains, so little time!
How about finding the right cannabis strain that works for you? Not what’s best for your friends… a strain that works for YOU. Maybe you’re dealing with pain, you’re having trouble sleeping, you need something to relax you, or maybe you need a good laugh. We are each unique, and so are our needs. There are a ton of options in today’s market, it can be overwhelming.
Let’s start here.
Why are you using cannabis? Determine your needs first. (Even if it’s just to enjoy your day/night)
Find your desired terpenes. If there is a terpene (They are responsible for the aromas/ flavors of cannabis) that appeals to you, chances are you will enjoy the strains that have those terpenes. Here are some of the most common terpenes and a little bit about their effects.
- Myrcene – (earthy, fruity, and clove-like smell) It has a calming effect, and it may help promote sleep and muscle relaxation.
- Limonene – (smells like oranges or lemons) Known for its uplifting effects, and currently being studied for helping with anxiety.
- Beta-Caryophyllene – (spicy and peppery aroma) Known for its anti-inflammatory effects.
- Pinene – (grassy, pine smell) May help combat short term memory loss w/ THC, may help with breathing and open airways.
- Linalool – (floral smell with hints of spiciness) Calming effects that might promote relaxation and help with anxiety.
- Terpinolene – (herbaceous, piney scent) Possible anti-inflammatory and anti-convulsant and pain relief.
- Humulene – (subtle earthy, woody aroma) May help with appetite suppression.
***More research is needed on terpenes and their effects on the body***
Start small. Purchasing pre-rolls is a great way to test out many different strains without breaking the bank. Purchase half a gram or 1g joints of new strains and try them before you buy larger quantities.
Get to the source. What is your favorite strain? Mine has been Bubba Kush since I started using cannabis! That strain is not always available; finding out the genetics of this strain is a great place to start!
Research and compare. Think of different strains like you would cousins in a family, you may have the same grandparents, but you have different parents. You and your cousins will share a lot of similarities, but you will also have your own unique characteristics too! Genetics play a huge role in the different effects we enjoy from cannabis. If the genetics of my favorite strain are OG Kush x Northern lights, I might find that I enjoy the effects that Northern lights has to offer, or strains that are bred from that strain!
Search your favorite strain on Leafly.com for more information on its genetics. Also, you can check the dominant terpenes of the strain you enjoy and check out which other popular strains share those terpenes! This isn’t speed dating; it will take some time. But keep in mind that using something that works for you will be a huge difference in your cannabis journey. Plus…. along the way, you may find more that you like!
