Scenic Escapes & Natural Wonders

Looking to stretch your legs and soak in some epic views? These spots are pure U.P. magic. They’re full of fresh air, natural beauty, and enough “wow” moments to fill your camera roll (and your soul).

1. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

If you’ve never seen the cliffs glow in the late afternoon sun, you’re in for a treat. With vibrant sandstone formations, waterfalls, and crystal-clear water, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising is a must. Hike the trails, hop on a boat tour, or kayak along the shoreline for front-row views of nature’s masterpiece.

2. Presque Isle Park & Black Rocks

This one is a favorite for Marquette locals. Walk the loop around Presque Isle Park, take in panoramic views of Lake Superior, and if you’re feeling bold, join the cliff-jumpers at Black Rocks. Stay for the sunset. Trust us.

3. Porcupine Mountains

The Porkies offer that perfect blend of rugged and peaceful. Explore miles of remote trails, take in the view from Lake of the Clouds, and get fully immersed in the kind of forest silence that resets your brain. This is peak “disconnect to reconnect” energy.

4. Laughing Whitefish Falls

Tucked away in the woods, Laughing Whitefish Falls is a lesser-known gem that has one of the tallest waterfalls in the state. The short hike in is all part of the charm, and the view is totally worth it.

5. Tahquamenon Falls

Tahquamenon Falls is a U.P. icon. With rich, coppery water and easy-access trails, this is a great stop for hikers and wanderers alike. There’s an upper and lower falls area, so take your time and see both.

6. Bond Falls

Often overlooked by tourists, Bond Falls is a favorite with locals, so you know it’s good. The walkable boardwalk makes the hike super accessible, and the cascading falls are straight-up soothing.

Small Town Charm and Unique Stops

Sometimes the best part of a road trip isn’t the big landmarks. It’s the cozy corners, historic sites, and off-the-beaten-path towns that make you want to slow down and stay awhile. These U.P. gems offer a little bit of everything: charm, history, great views, and plenty of local flavor.

  • Grand Marais

Tucked along Lake Superior’s southern shore, Grand Marais is a quiet beach town and the perfect launch point for exploring the eastern side of Pictured Rocks. Stroll the waterfront, grab a bite at a local diner, and enjoy the slower pace.

  • Big Bay

Just north of Marquette, Big Bay is all about peace, quiet, and a deep breath of fresh air. If your idea of a perfect detour involves lake views, wooded backroads, and minimal cell service (on purpose), this is your spot.

  • Copper Harbor (Keweenaw Peninsula)

Way, way up north, Copper Harbor is where rugged beauty meets adventure. Hit the mountain biking trails, dip your toes in Lake Superior, or just kick back and do some of the best stargazing in the state. It’s remote, rewarding, and totally worth the drive.

  • Fayette Historic State Park

Step back in time at Fayette Historic State Park, a preserved 19th-century iron-smelting town. Historic buildings, limestone cliffs, and lake views come together in a setting that’s equal parts educational and breathtaking. Bring your camera and your curiosity.

  • L’Anse & Baraga

L’Anse and Baraga are twin towns that hug the shoreline and serve up serene lake views, local eats, and easy access to Mount Arvon, Michigan’s highest point. It’s a perfect stop if you’re looking to stretch your legs and take in the kind of scenery that doesn’t need a filter.

  • Manistique

Manistique is a little coastal town that is home to Kitch-iti-kipi, Michigan’s largest natural spring (which is just as magical as it sounds). Ride the self-powered raft across the clear, blue-green water and peer into a surreal underwater world. Afterward, take a walk along the Lake Michigan boardwalk and soak in the fresh lake breeze.
